Titanium products must be cut before forming. Titanium plate cutting is also used conventional punching, cutting, milling and sawing methods. Because of the high strength of the titanium plate, it is different from the aluminum alloy.

1. Cutting

Fabricate wool or parts with a straight shape that can be cut on a gantry shears. If you use an ordinary shearing machine, carefully check whether the equipment can cut the titanium plate. Titanium alloy plates with a thickness of less than 35 mm can be cut out to the required size under production conditions. Thicker sheets can also be cut if the necessary measures are taken to avoid slipping during shearing. In order to prevent slipping, a larger clamping pressure is required. On the edge of the cut titanium plate, especially for thicker titanium plates, the linear deviation is 0.25-0.50 mm, which is usually caused by insufficient rigidity of the cutting edge. This defect can sometimes be overcome by using a thicker cutting edge. If the stopper is modified, and the technology of digital display and fine tuning is adopted, the cutting precision can also be improved. The edge crack depth of the titanium plate does not exceed 0.4 mm, which can be removed by grinding and filing with grinding wheel. If cutting causes cracks in key parts of the part, a blanking method such as a band saw should be considered. When the material is cut with the gantry shears, the minimum gap between the single sides of the scissors is 2-3% of the thickness of the material, the shear Angle is 75-85 degrees, the back Angle is 2-3 degrees, and the blade inclination Angle on the inclined blade shears is 2-5 degrees.

Titanium plates can also be cut by ordinary rolling shear equipment. Circular shear can cut the contour line with a large radius of curvature (minimum radius of about 250 mm), this method is used for titanium plates with a thickness of less than 2.5 mm. The current vibration shears are only suitable for cutting titanium plates with a thickness of about 2 mm, and the cut wool edges must also be filed or ground, leaving a filing allowance of more than 0.25 mm. For thin materials (thickness < 0.8mm), when the number is not large, you can also use lever manual cutting or hand cutting material.
2. Punching and cutting

Generally, the desired shape of the wool is cut at one punch. Usually for simple shape wool, the maximum cutting thickness is about 3 mm. The cutting die of titanium plate should be rigid enough, and the guide post should be used to keep the upper and lower die in accurate relative position. When manufacturing a variety of flat parts or wool of various shapes, the minimum size of the titanium plate punching and the minimum radius of the connecting edge of the punching part should meet the requirements.

In addition, the punching machine can also be used to cut the material, processing according to the template with a small die out of the crescent incision, and make it connected, so as to cut out the parts burr, and then repair the key edge, the edge quality and accuracy are not as good as the punching die, the efficiency is not high. Punching and shearing processing has the advantage of short production preparation cycle, often used for small batch production.

3. Band saw

The band saw has high processing efficiency and convenient production preparation, but it is not suitable for processing too thin materials, and is often used for cutting titanium plates with a thickness of more than 3 mm. This method does not produce edge cracks, and its disadvantage is that there are burrs, which must be polished after cutting. At present, it is used for cutting edge, trimming edge and cutting end and other processes.

Band saw cutting can be divided into three categories: friction, semi-friction and ordinary band saws. Friction band saw work due to the high line speed, saw blade and workpiece between intense friction, the cutting area temperature is very high, thus reducing the cutting resistance of the material, improve the workability, high efficiency.

The tape used for sawing titanium should be rigid structure and have enough power to maintain a constant speed when sawing; Should be able to automatically feed, tension band saw and provide sufficient coolant. With a normal high speed steel band saw, the edge can be maintained and stable results obtained. Tungsten carbide blades are used to cut particularly thick materials, reducing burr height and depth affected by heat.

4. Milling

A stack of titanium plates is cut to the desired shape with a milling cutter, with the milling head moving along the milling template, or automatically with a large CNC sheet metal milling machine. For the stretched edges such as concave curves or flanging, the waist is polished before forming to prevent cracks.
